AI-Detection Tool Use Guidance from Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach (CTLO), Hixon Writing Center (HWC), and Deans' Office

Various generative AI (GenAI) tools exist that aim to help educators detect the use of GenAI to compose documents submitted by students. Such tools typically allow the submission of a text that is scanned and rated for the likelihood of AI use. At this time, Caltech's Undergraduate and Graduate Deans, the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach, and the Hixon Writing Center strongly discourage the use of GenAI tools designed to detect GenAI use in student writing. First and foremost, these tools are not reliable. They produce false positives and false negatives, and they are not an aid to investigations into academic dishonesty cases. Further, the use of such tools can create a culture of concern among students, including those with no intention of violating course policies, that erodes the trust between faculty and students that makes learning possible. Finally, the use of these tools may raise ethical concerns related to privacy and fairness. If you suspect academic dishonesty in a student's work and are not sure how to proceed, contact the appropriate dean's office for guidance.
